Try These To Learn To Speak English

The acquisition of a language is not simple, whether it’s your first language or a second one. Regardless of what a lot of non-native English speakers the world over like to think, learning English is not easy, either. Those who wrongly think that to learn to speak English isn’t difficult will find out quickly how wrong they are.

To begin, at a basic, communicative level, speaking English is not as difficult as speaking other languages is. Because so many people worldwide speak English, a multitude of accents and pronunciations can be heard even among native speakers. And because it’s somewhat easy just to pick up basic English, people commit the mistake of believing that speaking English is easy.

Next, English grammar and sentence structure contain many rules. Yet, so many of these have exceptions to them that it’s not easy to learn and remember them all. Further, when and how most of the rules can be enforced are not consistent because there is a lot flexibility. Because of these issues, rote memorization of English is ineffective.

Third, English pronunciation is inconsistent. In truth, it’s so fluid that even in native English-speaking countries, pronunciation differ from region to region. Yet, successfully pronouncing English is a major aspect of conquering the language. There is no simple path to mastering the pronunciation, either, whatever you’ve heard. Pronunciation takes study and practice. And then more study and practice.

Another difficulty is recognizing the correct vocabulary, structure, and grammar, and when to use it, even if it doesn’t really seem right. One example is using split infinitives. In school, we are taught not to use them, yet using split infinitives is normal in spoken English. They’re usually used to emphasize a point. Some even argue it just sounds better that way.

A fifth element is the knowledge of colloquial and proper English and when to use each of them. This can be difficult when celebrities constantly misuse proper English. Many English learners pick up on what these famous people say and they copy them. Of course, there are plenty of professionals and academics who can’t use slang correctly.

A sixth problem when studying English is the language ”masters” out there claiming that theirs is the best method for learning English fast. This is false, regardless of what scientific facts they present showing how effective their curriculum is. Don’t listen to these charlatans. Learning English, as with learning any language, is not easy and learning it properly takes time, patience, practice, and good teaching.

Finally, English is a fun language. Listening to non-native speakers is not difficult for native speakers. We’re used to hearing a variety of accents from our fellow native speakers. Therefore, if you intend on learning to speak English, even the barest of efforts will allow you even basic communicative abilities.

But, if your desire is to improve your skills, you’ll have to do what you always have to do to master something. You need a solid foundation of the basics, daily acquisition of new vocabulary, daily pronunciation and grammar practice, and no fear of making mistakes. It’s not easy to learn English, but you can make it look easy if you put in some work.
